The Canadian Digital Media Network (CDMN) is not afraid to dream big. At Canada 3.0, their annual conference, the Centre of Excellence for Commercialization of Research (CECR) focused on bringing together industry, government, academia and interested Canadians to plan a bright future for Canada’s digital society.
Industry Minister Tony Clement spoke at Canada 3.0 to launch a nation-wide consultation on developing plans for the future of Canadian digital economy, a plan which was mentioned in the Speech from the Throne.

The Canadian Obesity Network (CON-RCO) was created in 2006 as a Network of Centres of Excellence New Initiative to create a coordinated response to the obesity epidemic. CON-RCO connects health professionals across disciplines and across the country in an effort to bring together obesity research, funding, prevention and treatment strategies.
CON-RCO credits the NCE-New Initiatives (NCE-NI) with giving them the boost to move forward quickly in constructing a national dialogue on obesity.

On May 17, 2010, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, announced the recipients of the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program in Toronto. Among them are two world-class Arctic marine researchers who will be joining the ranks of ArcticNet at Université Laval and at the University of Manitoba, consolidating the well-established reputation of these institutions as preeminent centres for Arctic research.

A vaccine targeting Chronic Wasting Disease, a progressive, fatal and incurable prion disease in alternative livestock, is one step closer to commercialization with the Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise’s (PREVENT) recent agreement for exclusive rights to use proprietary technology in its development. The agreement with the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO-InterVac) at the University of Saskatchewan aims at the development of a vaccine to control the disease in deer and elk.

“Be a Food Researcher for a Week,” organized by the Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet) is helping to promote education and science interest among First Nations, Métis and Inuit high school students. The program provides 10 students from across Canada with an all-expenses-paid trip to spend a week in a Canadian university lab, gaining hands-on experience in food science research. The event is in its second year, and is already proving a successful initiative to opening up new career possibilities to these students.

The Centre of Excellence for the Prevention of Organ Failure (PROOF Centre) has partnered with Luminex Corporation to bring a ground-breaking new test for transplant patients to hospital labs. The new technology seeks to decrease the number of biopsies required by transplant patients, saving the health care system money and saving patients the pain and anxiety of repeated invasive procedures.

The Stem Cell Network (SCN) has published a gallery of images and artwork from Canadian labs. Selected images were chosen from SCN’s “Cells I See” art contest, which offers a $500 prize for original works of photography, photo-based or illustration (hand-drawn or computer-generated). Images or artwork must reflect how the contestant sees stem cells.

On June 7 and 8, 2010, more than 1,000 stroke researchers from across Canada and around the world gathered in Quebec City for the three-day Canadian Stroke Congress which provided a uniquely Canadian forum in which participants reflecting bench-to-bedside-to-community perspectives of stroke could exchange ideas, collaborate, and learn about innovation in stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery.
