PSAB welcomes new Chair |

Marc Leroux has been appointed Chair of the Private Sector Advisory Board (PSAB). Mr. Leroux, a member of the PSAB since 2013, is the Principal at Priorat Capital, and has an extensive background in innovation and technology transfer. The PSAB is tasked with providing expert advice and recommendations for the Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) and Business-Led Networks of Centres of Excellence (BL-NCE) programs. |

NSERC searching for VP of Communications, Corporate and International Affairs |
|

| |
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) has begun its search for a new Vice-President of Communications, Corporate and International Affairs. This new position will see the successful candidate take charge of internal and external communications, stakeholder relations, corporate planning and policy, international affairs, and other corporate portfolios. The position is an amalgamation of duties from across different executive positions to place them under one overarching umbrella, allowing us to achieve the goals set out in our vision for NSERC’s Strategy 2020. Canadian Science Policy Conference |

Research and Impacts
- IC-IMPACTS’s Advanced Pavements project broke ground on March 31, 2015, just outside of Bengaluru, India. The project’s innovative Canadian pavement technology utilizes super-thin pavements and smart sensors, and is projected to add 15 years to road lifespan. New roads will be built with less material, produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions and recover surface water. Read more
- The LegWorks “All-Terrain Knee” (AT-Knee), a prosthetic knee joint that could allow for more universal access to better prosthetics around the world, is now set for mass production. Funded in part by MaRS Innovation, it has undergone trials in 10 countries and is already outperforming existing technologies under rigorous conditions, proving to be safe, high-functioning, durable, and affordable. - According to an AllerGen-supported study, children who are allergic to peanuts are most at risk of exposure at home, not at school. AllerGen investigator Ann Clarke says: “Allergen exposures continue to occur, mostly in the homes of the peanut allergic children, and most are not optimally managed by patients, caregivers and health professionals.” Read more
- The world’s first low frequency calibration system for hydrophones was designed by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Prototype Equipment Design. This system calibrates ultra-sensitive acoustic sensors that are able to detect sounds from sources such as earthquakes, underwater landslides, large baleen whales and shipping. ONC’s Innovation Centre had a role in devising the prototype for this technology. Read more
Events
- The Wavefront Summits, held in Ottawa in May, brought together hundreds of entrepreneurs from small Canadian companies and major multinationals. The two-day wireless technology and business conference helped Canada’s wireless firms capitalize on opportunities offered by wireless technologies and increase their performance, productivity and profitability. The successful event featured more than 100 Business-to-Business (B2B) meetings, as well as 35 internationally recognized speakers. Read more
- AUTO21’s final Annual Conference: A Legacy of Collaborative Innovation attracted more than 300 researchers and government and industry representatives to Ottawa in May. This event showcased the accomplishments of the network over the last 14 years and looked at future activities that could help meet the needs of the automotive sector. It also featured AUTO21’s poster and video competitions for student researchers. Read more
- In April, SERENE-RISC hosted more than 115 cybersecurity enthusiasts from academia, government, industry and not-for-profit organizations, at its Spring 2015 Workshop. The workshop included an opening keynote speech by Christopher Soghoian, from the American Civil Liberties Union, and 12 additional speakers who addressed various aspects of the future of cybersecurity. People and Awards
- The first Mitacs Entrepreneur Awards celebrated start-up companies founded by outstanding alumni, including Guillaume Brault, a former Mitacs Accelerate intern. Dr. Brault is the co-founder of Inova Source, a neutraceutical company that advances the processes used to convert algae by-products into high-demand vitamin and food supplements. Clayton Hiles of Cascadia Coast Research, another former Mitacs Accelerate intern, was an honorary recipient. Read more
- A partnership between C2MI, Teledyne DALSA, Université de Sherbrooke and École Polytechnique de Montréal was honoured in May at the Célébrons le Partenariat event presented by the Association pour le development de la recherche et de l’innovation du Québec (ADRIQ). The Infrared Imaging (IR) project, the result of the collaboration of 45 researchers and more than 15 graduate students, received the Research Partnership Award. Read more
- David Phipps, the NeuroDevNet KT Lead, received the 2015 President’s Award for Innovation at the 2015 Canadian Knowledge Mobilization Forum Creativity as Practice: Mobilizing Diverse Ways of Thinking. This award recognizes Dr. Phipps’ extraordinary contribution to the field and practice of knowledge mobilization in Canada and internationally. Read more
- The Green Aviation Research and Development Network (GARDN) announced its fourth Recognition award laureate, honouring Benny Pang, Knowledge Domain Owner (Acoustics) for Bombardier, former Chair of GARDN’s Scientific Committee, and Scientific Director of GARDN. Throughout his career Mr. Pang has made a significant contribution to the network and to science and technology in Canada. Read more
Partnerships, Best Practices and Investments
- From April 17 to May 4, ArcticNet, Statoil Canada, RDC and Husky Energy collaborated on a research and technology expedition on the CCGS Amundsen, offshore of Newfoundland and Labrador. Scientists and technical staff studied sea ice, icebergs, and environmental and meteorological conditions to better understand offshore and harsh weather environments. This project will help improve safety practices related to ice hazard mitigation and provide insight on technology requirements specific to cold ocean regions. Read more
- The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) and the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer — Commercialization of Research (IRICoR) have announced three collaborative projects to develop cutting-edge therapeutics for patients. These collaborations are part of the Merck $ 2-million commitment to support British Columbia-Quebec corridor projects between IRICoR and CDRD. Read more
- The Ultra Deep Mining Network and Jannatec Technologies announced a new partnership at the 2015 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Conference in Montréal. They will be collaborating on two projects to improve human health, namely a wearable communication system that incorporates underground high-speed wireless communication and a personal thermal management system.
