Best Practices in HQP Training Programs

When creating an HQP program, a network needs to look at: (1) its own strategic priorities; (2) the value added of its HQP program; (3) the potential for capacity building of the HQP and within the network; and (4) measurable outcomes and impacts such as the number of HQP, the breakdown of male and female HQP, and case studies. This session will provide examples of what this means from three different networks at three different stages. The format of the session will provide for a Q and A that will allow other networks to share their experiences and challenges, and allow new networks to ask questions and learn from their colleagues.



Governance Planning Strategies (GPS): Will you reach your destination?

On the path to success for networks, the board of directors plays a pivotal role in plotting a course for the not-for-profit to deliver in the NCE program and on its broader objectives. Minimizing reaction planning and instilling effective operations will lead to the ability to be strategic and to anticipate future opportunities and challenges. This panel will discuss: considerations in operating plans; approaches to being adaptable while still achieving your objectives; and thinking beyond the NCE grant.

NCE Best Practice: KTEE & KM

No matter the quality of research or innovation, its social and economic impact ultimately depends on the rate of uptake and meaningful application by end users. KM and KTEE are vital activities for successful networks. This session will explore their strategies and practices, as well as those of other experts in the field.

Discussions will seek to answer:

  • What strategies work best for increasing the uptake of knowledge by end user communities?
  • When and how to engage end users in the research?
  • What metrics can be used to track uptake and impact?



NCE Best Practice: Reporting Success, Government Relations and Getting Your Brand Recognized

Brand recognition is key to a network’s success. Participants will learn how to position their network and help key government stakeholders recognize its value to Canada. Discussions will focus on some approaches that have worked for past networks as well as what captures government stakeholders’ attention. Best practices will be shared on how to collect and present stories about successes, how to gain recognition as a trusted advisor in your area, how to cultivate relationships with key opinion leaders, and how and when to involve the NCE Secretariat’s Communications department.



NCE Best Practice: Leveraging Other Sources of Funding (Fundraising, Other Government Funding, Charitable Status)

NCE funds are often leveraged to maximize the impact and legacy of a network. Learn how network leaders are approaching fundraising through industry partners, different levels of government, and donations from their user communities.

Discussions will seek to answer:

  • Should we seek charity status or create a foundation?
  • What are the best tactics to raise funds from industry?
  • How do we identify potential other sources of government funding?
