A message from the Associate Vice-President

Inspiring, impressive and forward looking, are among the words attendees used to describe the NCE Annual Meeting that was held this past March, in Ottawa. The NCE community came together to discuss how they are delivering impacts for Canadians through powerful local, regional, national and international multidisciplinary research collaborations. What struck me the most was the energy felt in the room and the interest demonstrated by the community to be part of the discussions surrounding the future of the NCE programs. The active participation of over 100 network leaders in engaging exchanges with guest speakers is truly what made this event a success.

I take this opportunity to offer special thanks to Mitch Davies and Nipun Vats of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) who joined us during the session covering the transfer of the Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) and the Business-led Networks of Centres of Excellence (BL-NCE) programs to ISED’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), as it was announced in the 2018 Federal Budget. Network leaders were encouraged to provide us their feedback regarding this upcoming change. The Secretariat received a number of submissions which we have now transferred to ISED.
Many of the networks and centres have invited me to participate in their events throughout the year. I am always delighted to come and meet you in your environment to witness your successes and accomplishments and engage in timely discussions which aim to continually increase the benefits Canadians derive from the NCE Program.
Indeed, as substantiated in regular program evaluations, each of your internationally peer-reviewed network and centre contributes significantly to Canadian research and innovation excellence in fields of national strategic importance. Your organizations represent major poles of attraction for top international researchers who conduct joint research with Canadians and help train the next generation of discoverers and innovators.
As the program approaches 30 years of sustained contribution to Canadian excellence, the NCE Secretariat team and I look forward to joining you at your next conference or workshop that brings your community together. In addition, when you are in Ottawa, the Secretariat’s door is always open. Don’t hesitate to let us know when you are in town and it would be our pleasure to welcome you to our offices.
You will see below that we are looking at giving our newsletter a new feel. I strongly encourage you to share your feedback and ideas with us. I am looking forward to reading and sharing your great success stories!
