At present, 6,779 highly qualified professionals — researchers in academia, industry, government and other organizations, research associates, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students — work in the NCEs, developing new ideas and turning them into marketable products and services.

In an important contribution to the cross-fertilization of research and technology, these NCE professionals authored 3,075 refereed publications in 2002–03. The networks filed 80 patents, of which 35 have been issued so far. In the area of licences, 17 have been granted while a further 21 are under negotiation. Five spin-off companies were also established.
