One of the biggest challenges small and mid-sized Canadian wireless companies face today is how to identify and connect with the critical resources, partners and opportunities that will enable them to commercialize new products and services, and expand into new markets. Vancouver-based business accelerator Wavefront broke new ground in helping companies in British Columbia, but until 2011, little help was available for companies elsewhere in Canada.

How one CECR is responding:

Wavefront is leveraging its CECR funding to expand its services nationally and take companies global. In 2012, Wavefront partnered with the Centre de recherche informatique de Montréal and the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program to extend its suite of accelerated commercialization and mentorship programs, international market linkages, mobile device library, training programs and events to companies in Quebec and Ontario. Its Market Linkage program connected more than 50 Canadian wireless firms with prospective customers across Europe, the Middle East, South America, Africa and Asia in 2012. Wavefront also partnered with Rogers Communications last year to open the new Rogers Wireless Innovation Centre in Vancouver, where business customers and developers can experience first-hand the latest in machine-to-machine (M2M) technology and enterprise mobility applications.

With new partnerships in the Prairie Provinces and Atlantic Canada in 2013, Wavefront is truly national in scope, supporting the growth and development of wireless companies from coast to coast.

"Just two years out of the gate, Wavefront is making significant progress establishing a national ecosystem of wireless companies in Canada to take advantage of emerging trends within the fast-moving mobile telecommunications sector."

What companies are saying:

"Rogers is passionate about fostering growth in M2M and strengthening the wireless developer ecosystem in Canada through simplifying the development and go-to-market journey. We are thrilled to be opening our latest innovation centre alongside Wavefront. Together, we can support current and emerging developers to get to market faster with innovative applications for connected devices, as well as educate Canadian companies about the benefits of M2M technology."s

- Mansell Nelson, Vice President, Advanced Business Solutions, Rogers Communications

"Wavefront introduced us to leading European mobile operators, which resulted in a partnership agreement being signed in less than two weeks. This facilitated access to this important market and the potential to generate new sales revenues, enabling us to grow our team in Canada while accelerating our time-to-market."
