(ISIS Canada)

Founder and president of NCE network Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS Canada), Dr. Aftab Mufti was recently awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions in civil engineering. In particular, Dr. Mufti was recognized for his work in developing fibre optic sensors to use in the construction and monitoring of bridges and other infrastructure.

A member of a national committee of experts on Canadian highways and bridges,
Dr. Mufti is studying how current design codes can be modified to incorporate new materials and design concepts, thereby enhancing their structural stability and safety. This work positions him at the forefront of a new interdisciplinary field he calls “civionics,” or electrical engineers working with electronics and photonics experts to study and innovate new technologies, such as remote sensors, to monitor bridges and civil structures for safety and longevity.

Dr. Mufti is professor of civil engineering at the University of Manitoba. His work is heavily cited in his field, and he has received several awards, including the Nova Award, the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Engineering Excellence, and the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada Award.
