From March 8-10 at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario, PrioNet Canada co-hosted PrPCANADA 2010 in partnership with the Alberta Prion Research Institute.  PrPCANADA has evolved into the second largest prion research conference in the world.  Due to the depth and breadth of prion research and its impact on Canadians, the conference is built on suiting different learning styles, interests, and levels of content. With over 280 attendees (35% of which were students and other young professionals), the 2010 program featured over 40 different speakers, three workshops, two panel sessions, poster sessions and various networking activities. 11 different awards were presented at the closing dinner for the Student and Post-doctoral Fellow Poster Competition where attendees also heard an excellent keynote talk by Dr. Chad Gaffield, President and of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Two different satellite events, one on biomarkers for prion disease and the other on chronic wasting disease management were held following the conference.

In conjunction with PrPCANADA 2010, PrioNet’s 5th Annual Student and Young Professional Association (SYPA) Day was held.  SYPA Day was developed to bring together the burgeoning young prion research community in Canada to network, partake in skill-building and professional development, as well as exploring career options. Over 80 attendees also voted in members of PrioNet’s 2010-2011 SYPA Council with the re-elected Chair, Angela Catford from the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Vice-Chair Harsha Koduri from the University of Alberta.
