Dr. Verna Skanes

Dr. Skanes is a former Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, and Professor of Immunology in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland. During her academic career, she served on various boards of directors in the biotechnology and medical sectors and as a member of the Standing Committee on Ethics of the Medical Research Council. Since 1999, Dr. Skanes has worked as consultant on projects related to health research, ethics and policy. She has also chaired expert review panels and the Standing Selection Committee for the Networks of Centres of Excellence. Her service on advisory boards includes the Advisory Board of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research Institute for Circulatory and Respiratory Health, and the Advisory Board of the Atlantic Innovation Fund. She is currently Chair of the Board of the Stem Cell Network, Chair of The Newfoundland Quarterly Foundation and a member of the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation’s Board of Directors. Dr. Skanes is a founding member and past Chair of the Board of Directors of Canadian Blood Services (CBS).
